Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) in NYC

Overview

Blepharoplasty removes excess skin, muscle, and fat from the eyelids to correct hooding on the upper lids and puffiness or bagginess on the lower lids. Many patients come to Dr. Zweifler because heavy upper lids make them look tired or older than they feel, or because lower lid bags create shadows that don’t go away with sleep. The goal is a more open, rested, naturally youthful eye — not a change to your fundamental appearance.

Am I a Candidate?

Good candidates are healthy adults bothered by upper lid hooding that affects their appearance or by persistent under-eye puffiness. Dr. Zweifler will evaluate your eyelid skin, fat distribution, brow position, and vision during your consultation, since a low brow or dry-eye condition can change the recommended approach.

The Procedure

Upper blepharoplasty incisions are placed within the natural crease of the eyelid, where they heal to become nearly invisible. Excess skin and, when needed, fat are removed and the incision is closed with fine sutures. Upper blepharoplasty may be performed under local anesthesia in appropriate candidates.

Lower eyelid surgery addresses puffy under-eye bags, often through an incision hidden just inside or just below the lash line, repositioning or removing fat to smooth the transition to the cheek. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on whether it’s combined with other procedures.

Recovery & Results

Bruising and swelling are most noticeable in the first week and improve steadily; many patients feel comfortable in public with makeup or sunglasses within 7–10 days. Stitches (when non-dissolving) are typically removed within the first week. Strenuous activity is usually restricted for two to three weeks. Final results continue to refine over several months as residual swelling resolves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will eyelid surgery change my eye shape?

The goal is to remove excess skin and fat while preserving your natural eye shape — not to change it. Dr. Zweifler will discuss your specific anatomy and goals during consultation.

Is blepharoplasty covered by insurance?

Insurance rarely covers eyelid surgery — the vast majority of eyelid surgery is purely cosmetic and isn’t covered. The exception is when severe upper eyelid hooding significantly obstructs vision, in which case the upper lid portion may be covered after a visual field test and documentation.
